Moving boxes and bulk trash in Phoenix follow two different paths: flattened cardboard and packing paper go in the blue recycling container, and furniture or other large items need a bulk trash appointment made before anything goes to the curb. The appointment is the part people miss.
Unpacking produces two piles, and they are handled differently. Sort as you go and the week after the move stays short.
Which pile does each item belong in?
Flattened cardboard and clean packing or craft paper are accepted in the Phoenix blue container. Remove foam, plastic bags and other soft plastics. Keep the accepted material free of food, grease and liquids, and consult the City list for packaging that combines different materials. Keep ordinary recyclables loose rather than bagged. Separate the cardboard from its packing inserts before placing it in the blue container.
Everything else is a judgment call you make at the curb or in the garage. Ask yourself three questions about each item: is it mostly cardboard, is it bigger than the container, and will it fit in a pile you can carry out in one trip? The answers sort the pile before the truck arrives.
Book the bulky pickup before the pile exists
For the household moving arrangement, ask about local moving and describe the actual access at both addresses.
Phoenix publishes four bulk appointments per year and a pile limit of ten cubic yards per residence. Use the City instructions to assess the pile rather than guessing from the number of furniture items. Cancel at least two business days ahead if you need to avoid using an appointment.
Book early in the move, not the day the couch hits the driveway. A sofa, a mattress and a broken bookcase are one decision, not three, and the appointment covers the pile rather than the item.
One pile per household. Do not combine several households into a community pile, even on the same block, because the appointment belongs to a residence.
For the full set of rules and the appointment itself, see the City of Phoenix bulk trash pickup page.
Read it before you drag anything outside.
Sort accepted cardboard separately from furniture and other bulky material. Check the City acceptance list and book any required bulk appointment before putting items outside.
Break boxes down the way the sorter expects
For the household transport arrangement, give the mover both addresses and ask what carrying tasks the proposed agreement includes. Confirm collection separately with the responsible City service.
Flatten every box and cut the tape line so the cardboard lies flat. A box left assembled takes up several times the space and slows the whole curbside round.
Keep cardboard free of food, grease and liquids. The City accepts clean pizza boxes, but contaminated packaging needs a different disposal decision. Separate the clean packing paper and ask Public Works about any material you cannot identify confidently.
Remove foam inserts, plastic film and air pillows before recycling cardboard. Use the City material list to find the appropriate disposal or separate collection option rather than treating every packing insert alike.
The printable list from the city spells out what belongs in the blue container: Phoenix recycling list. Print it and tape it inside a kitchen cabinet before the move.
City collection or a private hauler?
Not every address in the Phoenix area sits on city collection. Some properties are served by a private hauler or an association arrangement, and the appointment rules above belong to the city service only.
Check the exact property before you plan a curbside pickup. Ask the seller, the landlord or the association who handles trash, and ask which container the address actually has. A house with a blue city container is a different situation from a condo with a shared dumpster behind a gate.
Measure the space while you are at it. Ten cubic yards is a limit, not a target, and a pile that blocks a sidewalk or a driveway is a problem regardless of size.
If the move crosses city lines, the rules change. A move into Mesa or Tempe is not governed by the Phoenix appointment system. For moves within the city, local moving covers the haul and leaves the disposal decisions with you.
| Item | Where it goes | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Flattened cardboard | Blue recycling container | Remove tape, foam and plastic film |
| Packing or craft paper | Blue recycling container | Keep it clean and dry |
| Foam and plastic bags | Trash | Keep out of the blue container |
| Sofa or mattress | Bulk appointment | Book before setting it out |
| Mixed household pile | Bulk appointment | One residence, one pile |
Set up water and trash in the same request
Trash and recycling service come with the water account, so the utility setup is also the trash setup. Phoenix takes water start, stop and transfer requests through its Customer Service Portal and asks for at least three business days to process them, weekends and city holidays excluded.
Submit the water request with the City minimum processing time in mind. Save the requested start date and confirmation, then confirm the account status before assuming that water or collection arrangements are ready at the new address.
Newcomer instructions, including the portal link, sit on the moving to Phoenix page. Start there rather than guessing at a deposit, since no universal amount applies.
If the move ends inside Phoenix, ask the City how the collection account applies to the actual destination. Keep the confirmed collection arrangement separate from the mover booking and do not assume the mover changes the account.
Plan the week after the move
Work backward from the confirmed pickup and the City placement instructions. Flatten boxes as rooms empty, keep furniture in a safe place on your property and check the permitted set out timing before moving anything to the curb.
- Flatten as you unpack. One room at a time keeps the cardboard manageable and the container clear.
- Separate foam and film. A trash bag for soft plastics next to the box pile saves a second pass.
- Stage furniture indoors. Keep items dry and out of the way until the pickup window.
- Count the pile. Ten cubic yards goes fast with a sofa and a mattress in it.
- Mark the calendar. The two business day cancellation window is easy to miss during a busy week.
For a household move within the local area, discuss local moving and the actual access at each address. Ask which carrying tasks are included instead of assuming a separate loading only service.
Neighboring cities run their own schedules. A move to Scottsdale or Chandler follows that city’s rules, not Phoenix’s, so confirm the address before you promise anyone a pickup date.
Two piles, two rules, one short week.
Questions to settle before the truck leaves
Ask the owner or landlord what was left at the property and who is responsible for it. Keep inherited furniture separate from the load until you have agreed what stays, what leaves and which collection service will accept it.
Measure the largest item and the space between the door and the curb. A dresser that clears the doorway may still not clear a narrow side yard.
Then set the order: water request first, appointment second, boxes flattened throughout. For a long haul into the city, long distance moving gets the load here, and the disposal plan starts the day the truck is unloaded.
Send your move date, both addresses and the access details at the new place, such as gate codes, elevator hours and where a truck can park, and we will put a quote together. Start at the quote request. Request a quote.
